Arlo was donated to the RAAF in August of 2018, and spent the next 11 months being developed into a MWD that was ready to be teamed. Once Arlo was deemed ready, he was sent to SASR to be assessed as a CAD. He was not deemed suitable for this role, so the RAAF took him back and I teamed with him in Sep 2019. Between September 2019 and Dec 2022, Arlo and I were able to consistently achieve LMC (the employable and deployable standard of training that the RAAF required at the time).
Arlo provided flight line security and asset protection duties at RAAF Base Richmond and RAAF Base Williamtown during his working years.

In 2022 we started noticing that Arlo would show reluctance to run or jump, with increasing regularity. Arlo had an x-ray on his spine which revealed that he has arthritis, inflammation and a “step down” in his lumbosacral region. The vet believed that Arlo likely has a compressed nerve in his lumbosacral region and would require an MRI to confirm, and then surgery to correct the issue. Arlo was retired in Dec 2022 as the surgery was anticipated to cost around $20,000 with no guarantee of his ability to return to work. Retirement was deemed suitable as his soft tissue injuries would be able to improve over time when not being consistently aggravated though work.
